Shake it Up for the Holidays with Shaker Cards!
So-called “shaker cards” are the rage of the greeting card and scrapbooking world these days. Using transparency sheets and some glitter, sequins or confetti, you can create beautiful, fun, interactive holiday cards (and scrapbook inserts) that are sure to stand out and command praise.
Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
Transparency sheet
2 pieces of 4”x6” cardstock (1 light colored – white works best – for backing, any color for front “frame”)
Die cut templates or scissors (for simple patterns)
Glitter, sand, small beads, confetti, seeds or sequins for the “shaker filling”
Stapler
Double Sided Adhesive/Tape
Scissors
Step 1:
Cut out a piece of transparency that is approximately 3 inches by 6 inches.
Step 2:
Fold the transparency in half along the long side so that you have a 3 inch square shape when the transparency is folded over.
Step 3:
Place approximately 1 teaspoon of “filler” such as glitter, sequins or confetti inside the transparency “pouch” and staple the three open sides shut, taking care to ensure that the staples are close together and do not leave any large gaps in the transparency.
Step 4:
Cut a window into your cardstock that is slightly smaller than the size of your transparency “pouch” to create the front frame. This can be a simple square or circle shape, or can be more creative (eg. a Christmas Tree outline) depending on your level of creativity.
Step 5:
Using double sided tape, tape the transparency “shaker pouch” to the backside of the cardstock frame, ensuring that the tape does not show through the transparency.
Step 6:
Using double sided tape, glue the back side of the card (just a solid piece of cardstock) to the backside card frame (where the transparency “pouch” is affixed).
Step 7:
Flip over and you should have a quality card that has a “snow globe” effect inside the transparency pouch when you shake it.
Step 8:
Decorate the card as desired using paint pens, ribbons or other scrapbooking type decorative items.
